Unwanted sign extension in diagnostic
#1339

The following problem, reported against GNU C 1.40 on 25 Jan 92, still
exists here with GNU C 1.41, itself compiled with GNU C 1.40 under
COFF encapsulation on this 386/ix 2.0.2 system (waiting for Hurd :-).

If I erroneously use accented characters, writing a C identifier, GNU
C complains:

   510) gcc bug1.c
bug1.c:1: parse error before character 037777777752

The diagnostic should avoid extending the sign of the character. File
bug1.c is uuencoded because many mailers destroy the 8-th bit:

begin 640 bug1.c
,ZG1R92`H*2![('T*
`
end
