GCC 2.3.1 %u sequence fails 8.3 file systems

GCC 2.3.1 expands the %u sequence in specs to ccXXXXXX where XXXXXX is
replaced by mktemp() with some other characters. Then, a number is
appended to make the name unique. On file systems which truncate file
names to 8 characters, the `unique' temporary file names created by
this method are not unique. This breaks the following GCC invokation,
for instance:

  gcc file1.c file2.c

as the object file for file1.c is overwritten by the object file for
file2.c.
