I've forgotten to mention that the observed behavior is on the following
platforms:

   1.  Sparcstation IPX, SunOS 4.1.3
   2.  Compiled on a Sparc 2, SunOS 4.1.1 with configure options:
           % ./configure sparc-sun-sunos4.1.1

Bug statement:

   "The abs value printed is -5 whereas it should be 5".
