Y'all,
   I received 3 replies to my question about good C++ books.
It seems that the author to own (if you want the last word) is
Bjarne Stroustrup. The two books recommended are:

"The Annotated C++ Reference Manual"
Margaret A. Ellis & Bjarne Stroustrup
Addison-Wesley ISBN 0-201-51459-1
(recommended as the full-blown reference manual)

and

"The C++ Programming Language (2nd ed.)"
Bjarne Stroustrup
no publisher or ISBN given
(described as less readable, but accurate)

Texts also recommended are:

"Advanced C++ Programming: Styles and Idioms"
James O. Coplien
Addison-Wesley  ISBN 0-201-54855-0
(highly recommended)

"C++ Primer (2nd ed.)"
Stanley B. Lippman
Addison-Wesley  ISBN 0-201-54848-8
(described as readable and fairly accurate)

"The C++ Programmer's Handbook"
Paul J. Lucas
Prentice Hall  ISBN 0-13-118233-1
(quick reference, superficial, but the nitty gritty details)

"C++ for Programmers"
Leendert Ammeraal
Wiley  ISBN 0-471-93011-3
(recommended for people learning C++)

Nobody responded with any books to specifically avoid.
Thanks to the people who responded to my questions.
