Hello,
    I was attempting to install version 2.2.2 of the gcc compiler on a
DecStation 5000/25 running Ultrix Version 4.2A but the procedure did not work
as described.  I did the following:
1. Downloaded gcc-2.2.2.tar.Z from prep.ai.mit.edu
2. Uncompressed and detar'd the file which created the directory gcc-2.2.2/
3. In that directory I type configure mips-dec-ultrix4.2a and got a series of 
   messages which seemed wholesome enough.
4. Typed make LANGUAGES=c and this seemed to be going fine until I received
    cc -Wf,-XNg1500 -Olimit 3000 -O1 -c -g -I. -I. -I./config expmed.c
as1: Error: expmed.c, line 2889: Not all branch-label symbols were defined
as1: Error: expmed.c, line 2886: Label referenced but not defined: -557
as1: Error: expmed.c, line 2731: Label referenced but not defined: -580
*** Error code 1

Stop.

If I've done something wrong let me know.

I'm letting you know :-).  I've made the same mistake.  I worked around the
problem by saying:

    % configure pmax-ultrix
