Sorry,
    When I sent the first message the GNU CC documentation hadn't finished
printing and so I hadn't read the "Known causes of trouble" sectin yet.  It
appears that the CC environment variable was set (to /usr/local/bin/gcc) which
caused the problem.  Please ignore the previous messafge.

BTW, I notices that the GCC document I printed didn't have a table of contents.
Is that as it should be?
