Has anyone succeeded in installing the GNU-Lib 1.05 on a DECstation under Ultrix? I have been working at it for a few days now, without much success. Here a short list of the problems: 1) When compiling (make lib), I get assembler error messages for some files, complaining about "undefined assembler operation: .stabs". Since there is no GNU-as for MIPS machines, I can't be using the wrong assembler. 2) When I ignore the first problem and type "make install", I get an enormous amount of error messages. I could trace most of them to the fact that the include files (*.h) are moved to their final place, but are later required in their old directories. I could get around this by setting INSTALL to "install -c", but I am not sure whether this is the right solution. 3) When working on the subdirectory time, zic complained about illegal arguments. After some study it turned out that the GNU libs contain their own version of zic, but for some reason not quite clear to me the standard Unix version is used later, which of course doesn't understand the enhanced functionality. To get around this problem, I changed the name of the new zic everywhere, but I doubt that this is the official solution. 4) I noticed that after installing libc.a, this file is modified again. From this I conclude that an unfinished copy is installed. Any help is greatly appreciated... Konrad Hinsen (hac041@zam001.zam.kfa-juelich.de)
