+ I want to build a GCC cross-compiler, running on HP/UX (68k),
+ targeting motorola 88k. Questions are
+
+ 1. Does gcc generate obect code directly, or do I need gas
+ to do that?

gcc-2.2.2 has 88k support and uses 'gas' for the assembler.

+ 2. Is there an 88k-targeted version of gas available?

alpha.gnu.ai.mit.edu has a package, gas-1.92.3 which supports the
88k. However it IS alpha, so the 'buyer' should beware..

The binutils-1.97 has an 'ld' capable of being configured for some
88k based system. Unfortunately, I have sun4's and haven't got
around to generating a ld-88k which handles BSD style a.out modules.
The support that's there seems to be SYSV(coff). Maybe that's ok for
the HP/UX base.
