Problem applying 2.3.1 patch

Hi.

I got the 2.3.1 patches and have tried to apply them to an untouched 2.2.2
distribution. The following reject files were generated.

cpp.aux.rej
cpp.fns.rej
cpp.cps.rej
INSTALL.rej

Is my distribution stuffed or the patch stuffed (I am certainly stuffed,
I've been messing with it for hours).

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
