I am trying to convince my boss to switch to gcc. He says that he will only
do so if :
1. gcc has been used in a real product.
Data General and NeXT use gcc as their native compilers that ship with
each one of their systems. their whole systems are compiled using
gcc. is that a real enough product for your boss? the next berkeley
release, 4.4BSD, uses gcc as its compiler.
2. It has been used with networking software, tcpip, Sun rpc, etc.
see above.
3. It works on (yuck)PC's, esp. OS/2 and Windows.
you can find versions for DOS and OS/2. don't know about windows.
He wants hard evidence of its viability largely because it is
unsupported.
your boss makes a rather unsupportable claim here, most likely due to
his own ignorance. if he wants support, he can buy it from a handful
of companies and consultants that offer it. similarly, if he buys a
compiler from Sun, it doesn't mean he'll get support -- he still has
to pay for that. the thing with gcc is that you can get the compiler
for free.
