Any help on building for SVR4

I'm attempting to build gcc 2.2.1 for an ESIA 486 running MST UNIX (vanilla
SVR4 4.0.3).  Looks like COFF support is available, but not ELF, right?
From reading the various READMEs, I can't figure out exactly what's
required.  To say nothing of the fact that the COFF patches for gas are for
1.36 and 1.37, leaving me with BIG .rej files for 1.38 (sigh).  Before
I go to all that work, anyone care to reassure me?  And perhaps outline
the steps required?  Thanks.
