Can't find file error with djgpp 1.08

I downloaded the latest djgpp and the dv/x libs and tried to compile
the sample program compress.

With a command line of

gcc -c compress.c

I get the following error.

d:/gnu/bin/gcc.exe version 1.07 Copyright (C) 1991 DJ Delorie
Can't open file <-c>

with gcc compress.c as the command I get this.

d:/gnu/bin/gcc.exe version 1.07 Copyright (C) 1991 DJ Delorie
Unknown file type 0x2a2f (025057)

Note the version number. I am using the same environment vars as the
last djgpp version and cross checked them against the docs. They seem
fine.

Does anyone know what I am doing wrong?
