gcc 2.2.2 vs 2.3.1

I've recieved several suggestions to install 2.3.1.  I've only just
finished installing 2.2.2, and I'm in the process of trying to install
GNU ld and libg++ 2.2 (currently unsuccessful), so I'm somewhat hesitant.

If I do install 2.3.1, do I need to retrieve a different ld or a
different version libg++?
