GCC 2.2.2 for HP720 Snake (need Help)

I am trying to install GCC 2.2.2 on our HP720 snake machine and have a few
questions. First though, what I did :

   configure hp720-hpux
   make LANGUAGES="c"
   make stage1
   make CC="stage1/gcc -Bstage1" CFLAGS="-O" LANGUAGES="c"
   make stage2
   make CC="stage2/gcc -Bstage2" CFLAGS="-O" LANGUAGES="c"
   make compare

Q1. The executables in stage1/ are PA-RISC1.1 shared executables (as
produced by the HPUX CC) but the executables in stage2/ are S800.
Why is GCC producing S800 - is an option not being passed to the
    assembler ?

Q2. Would it be a good idea to use GAS on the HP720 ?

Many thanks,

Peter Green.
