In gnu.gcc.help, I writes:

??
Maybe not. I've got this single match to *** in my make log:
    make: *** [sysdeps/../sys/param.h] Error 1 (ignored)

Anyway, I can't even build a hello program now that this is installed.
I have to back out of /usr/local/lib/crt0.o and /usr/local/lib/libc.a
from glibc in order to do a link step.

Sigh.
Along with the one real installation issue and couple of nits, this has
grown beyond this EE's software abilities.

If you see that I just need a tiny bit of help, please email or post --
but otherwise I guess I'll just wait for glibc to evolve. :(

Thanks for the help already from a few out there,
Richard Stallman for pointing me to glibc for ansi prototypes
David D Zoo Zuhn for correcting me: GNU ld !=
        .../lib/gcc-lib/sparc-sun-sunos4.1.1/2.2.2/ld
