System: SPARC 1, SunOS 4.1.1 A month or two ago, I made the claim that stripping the gcc-2.2.2 and/or 2.3.1 executables (cpp, cc1, etc) caused ld to fail (both Sun ld and GNU ld). I commented that not stripping these files caused the problem to go away, so who cares; then rms Himself asked me to investigate further. I was unable to duplicate the error; I have no idea why. I went so far as to unmount the partition containing a later (working) version of gcc, without being able to cause any ld problems. In any event, gcc-2.3.2 & 2.3.3 do not exhibit this behavior. Stripping cpp and cc1 cause no ld problems. I did notice, though, that while cc1 gets only about 10% smaller (from 1253376 to 1155072), cpp loses over 90% of its size (from 1253376 to 90112). -- Vince Tessier (vtessier@vela.acs.oakland.edu) Mort Sahl: General, aren't you supporting Castro by smoking that Havana cigar? Alexander Haig: I prefer to think of it as burning his crops to the ground. (from an interview of Mort Sahl on National Public Radio, 23nov91)
