I have exactly the same problem, on the same architectures, using
gcc-2.1. Perhaps we (Derek Jones and I) don't understand the
directions. I know I am confused regarding the procedure for cross
compilation, but I think I have tried all interpretations. Perhaps
there is still a problem?

I have tried:
make CC=gcc LANGUAGES=c; make CC=gcc install
make CC=gcc LANGUAGES=c; make stage1; make CC=gcc install
make LANGUAGES=c; make install
make LANGUAGES=c; make stage1; make install
make LANGUAGES=c; make stage1; make CC=stage1/gcc CFLAGS="-g -O -Bstage1/"

I think that the first of these is the intended procedure, but I'm not
sure. I have compiled gas, but I see no way to indicate this to the
make scripts. Configure allegedly ignores -gas on my platform. I
also think that I've RTFM'd pretty thoroughly.

Still a great product.

Any help appreciated.
