Protected Mode trouble

When I run a compiled GNU-C program, it complains that the machine must be in REAL MODE to run this program, although the PC version of GCC uses PROTECTED MODE instructions. I found out that the switching mechanism between REAL MODE and PROTECTED MODE used by GNU-C is a bit complicated. Obviously GNU-C wants to switch to PROTECTED MODE on its own, and this is only possible when the machine is in REAL MODE before calling the program. Since GNU-C expects the processor to be in REAL MODE, I have to make sure that no other program switched the CPU to PROTECTED MODE before. (I've "high- loaded" some TSRs and parts of the DOS system, and this causes a switch to PROTECTED MODE. So I always have to change my CONFIG.SYS when I use GNU-C. But this is no solution...) Anybody who has an idea? Any hint on this is welcome (perhaps it's only a misunderstanding of the .DOC files...!?) (Probably this has been posted before, but sorry..., I didn't find an answer...)
