renaming gnu ld

With regards to gcc 2.3.1 on a sparc running 4.1:

I think (but I'm not sure) I want to rename the gnu linker (ld) to
something like gcc-ld, and install it somewhere other than /usr/local
since there is an older ("proven") version of gnu ld in /usr/local/lib
that I don't want to overwrite just yet.

How do I get gcc to look for it in, for example, the /new/lib
directory? I've tried the -B switch, but I still see gcc invoking the
linker as "ld -e start...".

Must I resort to hardcoding the path and name into gcc.c somewhere?
I'm hoping there's a more proper way of invoking gnu ld.

Thanks
