How to get gcc to produce dynamicaly linked exe on OSF1?

I managed to build gcc without a hith on DEC OSF1 (decstation), but it
will not produce a dynamically linked executable. With the -shared flag
it tries to build a shared archive. I can't find anything in the Install
instructions that mention doing anything special to enable creation of
dynamically linked executables. Anyone know what I need to do?
