Apart from numerous other problems I'm having building 2.3.1 on this
machine, one of them is that when I try and compile some source with
-fpic the assembler pukes on the code generated, both gas and as alike.

The man page for gcc says:

     -fpic
If supported for the target machines, generate
position-independent code, suitable for use in a shared
          library.

However in a cursory search through source and documentation, I can find
no reference that says -fpic is or isn't supported on this platform.

Can anyone point me to a reference, or volunteer what the answer is?

Thanks in advance.
