help! gcc2.3.1 on sgi4d/30 [for that matter, bison too...]

...so, here I am, finally getting around to building gcc becuase we only
'accidentally' had a compiler before a recent upgrade [aren't vendors GREAT]
...I know, I know -- bad joe, don't put off building Important Tools again...

But the question is, *shouldn't* I be able to build the Things I Need given
    - kernel bootstraps
    - leftover header files
    - leftover libraries

Previously, I was stopped by only having as1 [and no as0] in the bootstrap
zone... now, after Yet Another Upgrade, I seem to have a happy 'strapping cc,
and I get thru the gcc build until it begs for bison....so I grab the bison
sources and find the header files filled with #idents...so I comment ALL of
them out, and die on:
# make
        cc -c -g -I./../include LR0.c
cc: Error: ANSI C is not installed. (could not find /usr/lib/accom)
*** Error code 1

...sigh. For those who tuned in late, or hate to read subj/summaries, this is
on a silly-graph 4d/30, upgraded from irix3.3.2 to 4.0.1 and now to 4.0.5. NO
'developer's option' -- we had bits and pieces leftover from a vendor's
boo-boo, misleading me to think that I was in the clear as far as a development
environment went...[grumble]

As usual, simply more weight on the side of free software....

joe, waiting for the HURD....

If you didn't think my earlier post needed clarification, then please skip
this. As I've been flamed a bit, I would rather work out understanding instead
of creating a war....

[vendor left things -- chiefly a compiler&libs set-- on machine that i was
hired to take care of]

I have no knowledge of what is bought/not -- I work with what they give me,
what I write and what i can find. I was flamed for this article claiming that
I was stealing an SGI product. I have not done such; I was under the
impression that we _had_ the compiler. Sorry if you feel 'ignorance is no
excuse', but it is one of mine.

[what I had and trying to make gcc while figuring out what the vendor had dobne
in the first place; sgi header files using #ifdef's; the point I reached with
bison; system setup]

...the final (and original) point being: is there *anything* that I can make
with the kernel bootstrapping tools, or should i fold in and get the
lab folk to shell out for a level of the development option.

Sorry, but I *was* under the impression that this is gnu.gcc.HELP, not
bug-report, not .misc.discuss, nor any other.

anyway, email help to jzp@gene.ummed.edu would be MUCH appreciated.

thanks again,
joe provo
