cross compiling on a SGI for the Sparc

I want to set up a cross compilation environment on our SGI machines for the
sparc and I am having some difficulty with the GNU assembler. It seems that
the assembler does not align correctly some data, but this doesn't happen all
the time. If I cross-compile with gcc 2.3.3 for the sparc and then transfer
the .s files to a Sun and assemble and link them there everything is OK; but
if I cross assemble on the SGI the linker (on the Sun, ld, not the GNU linker)
gives a warning about misaligned data and the program bombs with a bus error.
If I cross-link on the SGI using the GNU linker I don't get the message but I
do get the bomb. Is this a well-known problem? Has anybody experienced
something of this sort? I got the linker and assembler from prep.ai.mit.edu,
so they are the latest versions. Thanks for your help!
