Cannot debug large file with GDB on RS6000

I cannot use gdb-4.6 to debug large c++ executable (13Meg)
generated by gcc-2.2.2 on the IBM RS6000 (with fixed assembler).
The error messages were several lines of "GDB Error: `.bf' not found."
and 1 line of "gdb: aix internal: pending include file exists."

I appreciate any help on this.
