gdb doesnt recognize ISC core dump

i keep getting "core" is not a core dump: File format not recognized
this has happens with gdb-4.[4-6].
sdb works fine (for what it is) on the core files. 
what am i doing wrong ? is there some switches in the compilation of gdb
that i need to flip ? has anyone ever read an ISC core file with gdb ?
