(Naive?) problem using gdb with C/C++ code

This is probably the first time I am trying to use gdb with C/C++ code.
Most of my code is in C++. However the binary that I am trying to
debug links in a library completely written in C.

I get the following message ONLY when I am single-stepping
through C functions of the library:

Reading in symbols for xxxx.c...Invalid symbol data: unrecognized type-code `c' at symtab pos 106.

How do I get around this problem?
