Attaching to a process

I'm using gdb-4.7 on sunOS 4.1.2.

When I do gdb +help, it says:
This is GDB, the GNU debugger. Use the command
    gdb [options] [executable [core-file]]
to enter the debugger.

It would be nice if there was a version there.

The arguments to gdb don't include a PID.

I did this:
	ps | fgrep tin
	 7116 p7 S     0:01 xterm -title tin-debug -e bash
	 7122 p8 S     0:01 xterm -title tin -e tin
	 7187 p8 S     0:00 fgrep tin
	 7123 p9 IW    0:01 tin
	leisner@annapurna$ gdb /usr/marty/bin/tin 7123
	GDB is free software and you are welcome to distribute copies of it
	 under certain conditions; type "show copying" to see the conditions.
	There is absolutely no warranty for GDB; type "show warranty" for details.
	GDB 4.7, Copyright 1992 Free Software Foundation, Inc...

	Can't attach to a process on this machine.

How do I attach to a process?

I think what you need to do it type gdb /usr/marty/bin/tin
and then when it prompts you gdb> type help running. This ought to give
the command to link to an existing process. I have never tried it. Usually
I just type gdb filename
gdb>  run -options arguments
then begin the debugging.

In order to attach to a process on sparc I need:

> #include "nm.h"  /* added -- marty leisner */
in inftarg.c...

(John Gilmore caught this...)

Now, how do I update the version information on gdb (so I know I'm using
4.7.1...

Using mkid (wonderful tool, get it)...I saw:
symtab.h:8: the Free Software Foundation; either version 2 of the License, or
symtab.h:9: (at your option) any later version.
symtab.h:386: /* String of version information. May be zero. */
symtab.h:387:     char *version;

main.c:178: extern char *version;
main.c:630: -quiet Do not print version number on startup.\n\
main.c:1897: 	  version);
main.c:2491:   add_cmd ("version", no_class, show_version,
main.c:2492: 	   "Show what version of GDB this is.", &showlist);

but never see where version gets set to 4.7....(I grepped on 4.7 with no luck
in the gdb directory...)
