Many people have reported an error message /unknownerror in setdevice when using the 32-bit MS-DOS version of Ghostscript. This message is the result of two different problems in Ghostscript. First, the error name should be /VMerror or /limitcheck rather then /unknownerror. Fixing this properly requires minor changes in several different places; the fix will be in release 2.5. Second, this error is being produced because Ghostscript is insisting on allocating a full 1 Mb buffer for the printer band list; on systems with less than about 3 Mb of RAM, this is unlikely to succeed. Fortunately, there is a simple workaround. Line 71 of gdevprn.c in release 2.4.1 currently reads: if ( (space >>= 1) < PRN_BUFFER_SPACE ) Change this to: if ( (space >>= 1) < 10000 ) A fix equivalent to this will also be included in 2.5. L.
