This refers to the officially released version of GhostScript 2.4, taken
directly from prep.ai.mit.edu.

You are correct; the above message actually occurred during compilation of
a pre-release version, since discarded -- my mistake.

I believe you are correct; the cast was my best guess to get the code
to compile under HP-UX.
