We use Ghostscript to convert Postscript to high-resolution raster images that are eventually fed to a film recorder. The output frame is about 8000 pixels wide, which is considerably higher than most laser printers use. Simple graphics look fine at this resolution, but text is awful. Diagonal lines have "jaggies" that are much coarser than the output pixel resolution. To see an example of this try: % gs GS>/F1 /Times-Bold findfont 200 scalefont def GS>F1 setfont 0 0 moveto (AY) show GS>quit Notice the awful-looking edges of the letters. Feeding the same Postscript code to "xpsview" produces fine-looking output, so the problem is in Ghostscript itself or perhaps its font descriptions. This is version 2.5.2 of Ghostscript and its fonts. It's running on both an Iris Indigo running IRIX 4.0.5F and a Sun-4 running SunOs 4.1.1. The problem occurs on both machines. Is this a known problem? Is there an easy fix? We just got Ghostscript running last week, but the images will be shown at a conference a week from today, so there is some urgency to getting this fixed!
