Yes.  You just have to edit the FONTMAP file to tell Ghostscript
where to find the .PFB fonts.

I don't know.  The problem may be specific to X Windows, or to
client/server window systems, since I didn't observe anything like
this on my MS-DOS machine.

If some kind Unix user who observes this behavior could e-mail me
some gprof output (for various idiotic reasons, none of the Unix
systems to which I have access have working profilers), I might be
able to diagnose it and fix it quickly.
