Advice on debugging PostScript

On occasion I will use ghostscript to debug various ps files
that have given problems. This works very well, but
I wonder if anyone has advice on error handlers
or other debugging methods. For instance, is there a way to get the
line/char. position where an error occurs?

Thanks in advance, I will post a summary of
any usefull information I get.
