Ghostscript tried to open the file you specified -- the file named
alphabet.  If you wanted to process the file named alphabet.ps, you
should have specified alphabet.ps.  Nothing in the Ghostscript
documentation suggests that Ghostscript tries adding extensions to
file names, as far as I know.
