Hi, I only got interested in ghostscript yesterday when I foolishly disagreed with my boss about printing postscript to an HP deskwriterC ... After ftp'ing 2.4.1, patching it to 2.5.2 and building it I agree with my boss, it does what he wanted, but I noticed some wierd things on the way. (I'm using DecStations running Ultrix4.1 (and 4.2) trying to build gs252) Firstly the patch files had lines to say that certain files didn't have nulls at the end. My version of patch wouldn't handle this. I took a guess that they probably wouldn't matter in a UNIX system and blatted them... (Were any of them really significant?) (I got patch-2.0.12u7 but this was after I had removed the offending lines so I don't have anything to try out the new version of patch with. Would it have helped?) Next I tried to build it with gcc2.2.2 it compiled but when run it produced rubbish in the X11 display. So I tried again using the MIPS compiler (2.10). However this would not compile the files gdevmem1.c, gdevmem2.c or gdevmem3.c (with or without -O, it made no difference). It gave me the error: > cpp: error ./gdevmem.h:134: undefined control (I admit that I have looked at line 134 in gdevmem.h and couldn't see what it was wrong with it...) I compiled these three with gcc, made the rest with cc and a working thing came out the other end. What have other Ultrix people done? At least it displayed things OK on xwindows. (Well they were kind of crunched and distorted due to scaling but I guess thats normal, yes?). Anyway, I then tried to get it to output to an HP deskwriter C, or at least out to a file in a form that I could blat at the deskwriter. I sent the file to the printer this using the iwpr program which comes with CAP. I tried various drivers (deskjet, cdeskjet, cdjmono, cdjcolor and paintjet[but I only tried this one once :-)] ). It worked OK for the colorcir.ps and tiger.ps examples which came with the distribution but with all my own postscript things and the other examples did not print completely. For instance a man page I had fed though groff to get postscript lost a couple of lines off the bottom and the printer stopped after only drawing the tops of the letters on the last line it did draw. Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong? Is it iwpr or gs causing this? (The motivation for this is that we have recently brought a RasterOps CorrectPrint 300 color printer. It prints wonderful stuff but costs many $$$ a page. We thought the deskwriter would make a nice draft printer if we could feed it postscript so that we could feed the same file to both printers...) Comments on any or all of the above most welcome. --- Bruce Benson. ,_o ,__o Department of Computer Science. _-\_\,\_<, University of Auckland. (*)/'--/'(*) b_benson@cs.aukuni.ac.nz
