I had the same problem with several fonts in gs2.5 up but not in 2.4.
It occured with the gif8 x11 and ljet3 drivers. It finally turned out
to be gcc 2.2.2(?) with the -O2 optimization. Compiling with just -O
works fine, and I do know that this has been fixed in the upcoming
release of the compiler, due out any time now.

(The specific problems were the new charter and courier fonts and the
chess example. I also have the computer modern fonts installed in ps
and they "smeared" also.)
