Two users have reported problems with 2- and 4-bit-per-pixel devices in Ghostscript. Unfortunately, we did not test these facilities adequately. There are minor bugs in the copy_mono routines (affecting text and halftones), and a fairly major bug in the fill_rectangle routine (affecting graphics in colors other than black or white). These problems do not affect any driver in the standard Ghostscript release. You will only see them if you write your own driver using 2 or 4 bits per pixel, or if you create a 2- or 4-bit-per-pixel image device. The fixes we have found are awkward to implement in Ghostscript 2.5.2, since we have made them in the context of a substantial revision of the design of memory devices. The next public release of Ghostscript is planned for January; if you are being seriously inconvenienced by these problems and can't wait till then, send us private e-mail, and we will send you some new code and an indication of what you might have to do to integrate it into 2.5.2.
