problem compiling groff 1.06 w/gcc-2.3.1

Well, I don't know if this is a bug; I may have screwed up. Software is
gcc 2.3.1, libg++-2.2, and groff 1.06; platform is a Sun4/280 running
SunOS 4.1.2. Gcc/g++ and g++lib are installed (correctly, as far as I
can tell). When running groff's "configure" script, I get:

./configure
checking for gcc
checking if C compiler is also a C++ compiler
checking that C++ compiler can compile very simple C++ program
checking that C++ static constructors and destructors are called
gcc -O is not installed correctly: static constructors and destructors do not work

Any hints on what's going wrong here (I saw nothing related in the PROBLEMS or
INSTALL files)? I don't do C++, so this is an unknown to
me. Email, if possible; I'll post a summary to the above groups.

Thanks,

Brian
