You probably want to try out /mirrors/gnu/binutils-1.94-beta.tar.Z
from wuarchive.wustl.edu which is completely re-engineered to use
BFD libraries for object file formatting (supposedly compatible
with gdb-4.4).
You might also try ~ftp/gnu/gas-1.92.3.tar.Z from wombat.gnu.ai.mit.edu
for a similarly "compatible" assembler to produce BFD output.

I could not get these all to compile (let alone run!) using a.out for am29k
but I have got them running together using coff for am29k (configured as
target=ebmon29k). No idea if they work for sun4->sun3 a.out.

There do seem to be several flavours
of BFD library floating around the aethers which are not entirely
compatible (and also not easily identifiable by version number). Also
different flavours of gnu header files between gas-1.92.3,
binutils-1.94-beta and gdb-4.4, so you may be opening another can if
you try it.

I'm trying to build a minimal set of gnu cc compiler tools (gcc-2.1,
gas, binutils-1.9/{ar,ranlib,ld,nm}) that will run on a sparc but
manipulate sun3 binaries.

gcc-2.1 is designed for doing this.

binutils-1.9 is not.

For example, ld includes <a.out.h>, which on a sun4, trapses through
/usr/include/machine/a.out, which through symbolic links eventually
comes back to /usr/include/sun4/a.out, which is not what I'd like to
build a ld that knows about sun3 binaries.

Has anybody built these binutils tools for such a cross develoment
environment?
