fontutils-0.4 Make problem

On a sun4, with sunos 4.1 , after ./configure when I say make, make all etc, I g
nothing is specified for make. It does not start any compilation.
It switches to directories, and there is no target in GNUmakes.

I have gnumake 3.62, gcc 2.1, x11/r4.

make depend does not wotk either.
I do not see Makefiles target either.

Sorry, I must be douing something silly, But I have no idea what is wrong.
