gbd version 2.8 under SunOS 4.0

I'm trying to install gdb version 2.8 under SunOS 4.0 without success.
It has compiles and runs, but using the 'run' command causes the following
messages to appear:

        Starting program:....
        crt0: /usr/lib/ld.so mapping failure
        Program exited with code 0177.

I've run dbx on gdb, and the problem seems to be occuring somewhere in
a call to ptrace. Any ideas on what is causing this problem?
