The problem shows up on sun4-os4, not sun3.
Tar version 1.04.

% ls foo
bar     foo     lkj
% tar -f foo.tar.Z -cvz foo
foo/
foo/lkj
foo/dfd
foo/bar
^C%                      <--- here I had to interrupt.

'ps' indicated that compress was hung.
Tar was hung on line 1291 of buffer.c.
