Some students here at OSU sometimes creates some bad filenames and that cause tar core dumped and the backup aborted. What is the max length of filename that tar allowed? Do you have a patch for tar that skip the bad filename and go on to next file? Thank you for your help. There is no limit no name length. I can't say anything about the memory fault you are getting, because you didn't tell me the operating system and hardware you are using, nor did you tell me the command line you are using. If you are using tar to write to a tap drive, you should not use dd--tar can write to tapes directly.
