Tar is a GNU utility, hence, bug-gnu-utils is the right list. Can anyone tell me why some files are replaced by "@@MaNgLeD.?" when I use gnu tar 1.10 to archive directories? Names which are too long to fit within the limits of the tar format get their names changed in this manner. At the end of the tar file is a special record, however. When extracting, if you let tar complete (rather than interrupting it part way through), it will read this special record, and rename the files back to their normal names. -mib
