If a program tested by AC_TEST_PROGRAM dumps core on SunOS 4.1.1, a message reporting the core dump is written to stderr. This seems to happen because the exit status is passed back through the subshell and the && and is caught and handled by the topmost shell. I've worked out a way to avoid the message, and have tested it on a number of different machines. Here is the patch. --- acgeneral.m4.~1~ Mon Jul 20 01:09:47 1992 +++ acgeneral.m4 Tue Aug 11 01:16:14 1992 @@ -321,7 +321,7 @@ [$1] EOF eval $compile -if test -s conftest && (./conftest 2>/dev/null) 2>/dev/null; then +if test -s conftest && (./conftest 2>/dev/null; exit) 2>/dev/null; then ifelse([$2], , :, [$2]) ifelse([$3], , , [else $3 Ian Taylor ian@airs.com
