Somewhere between version 3.54 and 3.56 the -j option of make stopped
working. running make on its own source gives the following:

	the-taj% gmake -j2 -d
	[...]
Finished dependencies of target file `glob.o'.
	    Must remake target `glob.o'.
	cc -g -c glob.c
Failed to remake target file `glob.o'.
Finished dependencies of target file `make'.
Giving up on target file `make'.
Finished dependencies of target file `all'.
Giving up on target file `all'.
gmake: *** Waiting for unfinished jobs....

The "Failed to remake target file `glob.o'." appears before the cc has completed.

This occurs on all the systems I tried.
	sun3 sunOS 4.0.3
	hp300	MORE/bsd
	pyramid	OSx 4.0
	hp300	HP-UX 6.5
	hp800	HP-UX 3.1
