Can't get gnu indent -troff to work

What version of troff / troff macros does indent expect you to have?

We have -ms, -me and a few others, but none of them seem to work. Using it
with no macros also does not work. This is a BSD 4.3 system.

We use ditroff and psroff for our printing.

Any help would be appreciated.
