In the finger-1.36 distribution, the makefiles in the lib subdir contain the implicit rule .c.o: $(CC) -c $(CFLAGS) $(INCFLAGS) $(DEFS) $*.c Even though the file matched is /gnu/finger-1.36/lib/error.c, for instance, $*.c only expands to error.c, and gcc complains that it can't find error.c in the current directory. Replacing $*.c with $< fixes the problem. According to the info pages, $* should expand to "the stem with which an implicit rule matches". Is this not "/gnu/finger-1.36/lib/error"? -- Jason Merrill jason@jarthur.claremont.edu
