I am running Perl 4.035 on a variety of machines, but I first noticed this problem on an SGI machine running IRIX 4.0.4 (since then I've found the same thing on the Sparc and Sun3's running 4.1.1). My problem is this: The Perl manpage, book, and quick reference guide all say that sleep; should cause the program to sleep forever (or until a signal is received). I can't get this to work. sleep makes the program go away for a little while but it always comes back. I would like to block the process effectively (without a busy wait). I can't tell if this is a problem with the perl source or something done incorrectly when I installed perl. If anyone has any ideas (or maybe a nifty work around), I would be very grateful. Sorry if this has been discussed or found previously (or fixed maybe?). e-mail me (or post here if others might be interested). Neil McKellar (mckellar@cs.ualberta.ca)
