Bunutils-2.0 version of ar on a decstation?

I am happily using binutils-2.0 version of ar and ld on a sparc
running 4.1.3 and I'd like to move my environment over to a
Dec 5000/240 running ultrix 4.3. Gcc and gdb are running no problem.
However, I can't get ar to produce a working version. The configuration
script doesn't produce a makefile in the binutils subdirectory. After
hande compiling ar use the Makefile.in I get a version of ar that runs
but produces archive files that consist of the ascii line
!<arch>

Any ideas?
	Thanks in advance

Basically, the binutils do not support DECstations or other
machines using MIPS's object file format. There is some
minimal support in bfd as needed for gdb, but that is all.
I guess ar could be made to work without too much effort,
but without ld and gas, which would be much more difficult,
who cares?
