Problem with configure script

Hello:

There is a major problem with the configure script when gcc is found. You
set the "-O" flag which would be nice for general purpose compilations;
however, in the case of the configure script, GCC's optimization is too
effective eliminating the call to the function being checked for which
occurs after the exit(0).

It might also be nice to print out the status of each check so the user
can see if things are as they should be.
